Week 10: Reflection on the Module

This module has expanded the way I think about music. Having been introduced to a lot of new artists or artists who I had only heard of was very eye opening.

One of my favourite weeks was week 5 in which we were put into groups and assigned one of four different artists that we had to do a presentation on. My group was given Burial. Up to this point I knew of Burial and some of his tracks. However, in having to research specific things about Burial and his workflow I learnt a lot of interesting (and surprising things about the artist such as the fact he rarely uses a DAW and did not use one for producing any of the album Untrue. As well as this it was interesting to learn about his use of sampling especially when it came to drums. Burial got a lot of his drum samples from the game Metal Gear Solid giving his drums a unique sound which made me reflect on my own production.

I also thoroughly enjoyed week 8 in which we delved deeper into Brian Eno. I knew some of Brian Eno’s work partly through researching the now huge Fred Again… who had worked under Eno in a mentor student type of setting. We watched a documentary in class. It was interesting to learn about Eno’s ideas on music and art as a whole. After the lesson I went away and listened to some of Eno’s early work specifically Ambient 1: Music for Airports which I found to be enjoyable and inquisitive as a theory.
