Week 2: Track Analysis- Metaphysical Mall Grab

Metaphysical is a track off of Mall Grabs 2022 album ‘What I breathe.’ The track falls as the second to last song on the album at number 12 on the track list.

The track begins with the intro. An ambient pad with heavy reverb plays the notes A followed by F and then D, the three notes of a D minor triad. These long notes create tension to start the song. At the same time a breakbeat is can be heard as its volume is automated to increase. This adds energy to the track creating a dancing rhythm. Following the first 8 bars a thumping kick and open hat come in channelling a feeling of a pulsating ongoing march.

Mall Grab uses sampling throughout the track with the words ‘Metaphysical.’ He uses chopping to separate Meta and Physical as well as heavy delays with quick repeats. These delays often seem to become more distorted possibly through the use of formant manipulation.

The song also uses heavy synthesis throughout. There is a heavy sub bass used before the first drop in which another bass replaces it. This new bass is much grittier, likely using square waves rather than sine as well as multiple voices that have been slightly detuned to create this huge, stadium feel. The song also has a repeated 8 bar lead line which comes and goes throughout the track. This repeated lead line is the same we here in the intro which is automated to slowly increase in volume. Through layering different elements and adding and removing certain parts the song is able to keep its energy throughout.

The song structure is as follows:

Intro 0:00-0:50

Verse 0:50-1:17

Pre-Chorus 1:16-1:42

Chorus 1:42-2:33

Post Chorus 2:33-2:46

Outro 4:42-5:03
